How I Appear to Others Now vs. In College

If there’s anything that makes me more sad than the sight of puppies whining, it has to be the fact that I’m perpetually ignored by people that my family and I meet. Ever since I was little, and my family planned an arrangement to meet some old friends or some new friends, I always dreaded it because of the fact that I knew that I would be treated as if I was invisible. this is going to sound really selfish but everytime we interact with someone, my brother is always the one to get all the attention, even though I am working hard to help them have an enjoyable time, I never seems to appeal to them the way I would like to. I know that this isn’t really a big deal or that I should really just not even care, this always makes me feel down and honestly really hurts. Recently, a family who came over to my home kept saying to my mom in front of me, “Wow, you sure raised your first child well!” And it really, really hurt. I am hoping that, since I will be the only individual someone will meet from my family, that in college, I will be appreciated for who I am, and not have to go through that anymore… *Sorry if any of this sounded conceited! I don’t mean it that way!*

  1. Phoebe,

You definitely do not sound conceited, and I got to tell, you’re not alone. This happens with anyone with a sibling. The best part is, you’re right; in college, you won’t have to go through that because your older brother won’t exist to anyone! Everyone will only know you. So make the best of it girlfriend! It’s one of the reasons why I’m so excited to drop the Jonathan’s older sister name tag.

    1. Thank you so much! Both for reading/commenting as well as being empathetic towards me! It really does mean a lot to hear for the first time that I’m not alone in feeling this… I hope all the best for you too! :)
