Social Networking Sites for College Students

The internet has changed the way college students stay in touch and keep in contact with friends across the world. Social networking sites are now being used to find friends, jobs, and stay in touch with loved ones, all from the comfort of your dorm or house. Be sure to check out our social networking tips for information on how to protect yourself from not getting a job because of Facebook or MySpace.

Facebook

Facebook was the first large scale social networking site made specifically for college students. It was first released to selected colleges, and required a valid school email address to sign up. It still requires a valid school email address to join a college network, but anyone can now join and networks include regions (ex: Philadelphia, PA), workplaces, colleges and high schools.

Yahoo! Kickstart

A new social networking site for college students that allows students to stay in touch with other students, and help find jobs. This site has just launched so it may take some time until you can start to see many job listings and connections. It is cool to get in early because it will be easier for people to find you if there are less members.

MySpace

MySpace is the first major social networking site. When facebook was getting popular, graduates who no longer had access to a college email address joined MySpace. Now Myspace contains people of all ages and is known to allow users to completely customize their own profile page.
