College is expensive Ivy League and other expensive schools can cost a fortune so it is critical that parents and students both try to do everything possible to save money. It is important that students try to get as many scholarships and grants first before applying for student loans.

Types of college student loans

  • Student loans for students - payments are typically deferred while the student remains a full time student. Payments begin sometime after a student graduates.
  • Student loans for parents - parents have to start making payments immediately.
  • Private student loans - these can be for either the student or the parent and typically charge a higher interest rate.

  • FinAid (Smart Student Guide to Financial Aid). Provides information on all types of financial aid.
