Freshman 15: Exercising & Healthy Eating in the Cafeteria

Posted June 9th, 2008 at 09:40 AM by Chris Phillips

In college, a few slight changes to your lifestyle can really have a positive effect on staying healthy and avoiding the freshman 15.

Exercising:
I found making the gym part of my regular schedule very helpful. I knew every semester there was a specific time I went to the gym, and it became just like an additional class I had to go to. Also, when you work out regularly, you feel better about yourself, and you are more motivated to stick to a healthy diet.

Healthy Eating in the Cafeteria:
When eating in the university cafeteria, I would try to substitute more healthy food and drinks for the unhealthy ones.

I rarely ever drank soda, and instead drank low fat chocolate milk or water. In the morning I would only eat egg white omelets with American cheese, and whole grain toast. I would eat tuna sandwiches a lot and sometimes tuna salad. These types of small substitutes can really add up and help you stay healthy and avoid the freshman 15.
