High school can be a tough time for teenage high school students. Parents usually put a lot of pressure on high school students to get good grades and get into the best college. Additionally high school students are told to figure out what they want to be for the rest of their lives. This can lead to confusion, frustration, and other issues. High school students should follow these high school tips to prepare themselves for college, and give them an edge up on other students.
By following the steps below high school students can improve their chances of getting into a good college.
High school students have heard it a million times from parents, family members, school counselors; get good grades in high school. The reason is you are competing against tens or hundreds of thousands of other students to get in and colleges need some way of cutting down the number of applicants they need to review, so they just cut out all students that have below a 3.0 (or whatever cutoff they use) so they don't get too overwhelmed with applications. Colleges look at GPA in detail when comparing 2 candidates, but it is not the only thing they look at. Other activities, clubs, community service, leadership and awards also come into play.
High school students should remember they are competing against students all across the country to get into a good college. Community service, awards and being involved in clubs and organizations can be the tie breaker to get you into a good college over someone with similar grades as you. Getting involved also prepares a high school student for college and helps gain experience working, interacting and socializing with other people. This helps build leadership experience and proves you can work well with others. College is getting so competitive that now colleges are not saying "we want all the students with 3.5 GPA and above", they are saying "we want students who are involved with a GPA of 3.5 GPA and above" (GPA is made up, so don't get discouraged if you are below that, check with the college you are applying to for their requirements).
High school parents are not always right. Some parents push or force their children into schools or majors that the high school student is not interested in. This leads to the student loosing focus, not performing well in college, wasting money, and possibly dropping out. It is very every high school student tries to figure out what they are interested in, and what they are passionate about. If you interest or passion is not a reasonable career, try to find something that matches your interests or talents. Subjects that come easy to students, or the student has an interest in tends to lead to a more successful college student who has a better ability to focus and study. High school students should figure out what they want to do, and discuss it with parents.
Having information and statistics on the major or field you want to go into can help your parents understand you are passionate about it. Ultimately high school students should be on the same page with parents when attending college.
